Russian banya

There is an old Russian tradition to go to banya to refresh you body and mind after a hard working week or after a long trip. It’s a very relaxing experience that helps you to obtain unforgettable lightness in the whole body and submerges you in the atmosphere of absolute eternity and perfect bliss.

Bath procedure has got a long history. At first people took a bath to clean their body. Then they realized that they could have more fun, if they make the process more complicated. As s result Roman terms appeared as real places of pleasure. But today we care more about our health. We think of way how to reduce our weight and banya can help us. The banya is not as hot as the Finnish sauna, but what it lacks in temperature is compensated by pouring more water over the stones of the stove, creating steam. In the steam room, called parilka, there is a wood stove, where the heat comes from. Beside the stove stands a bucket of water that is poured over the heated stones of the stove. As a rule there are wooden benches across the stove. Russian people like to use birch branches to stimulate the blood circulation. It’s very healthy and enjoyable.

Sometimes you can alternate Russian bath with Turkish bath and Finnish sauna. The main difference between them is that Turkish bath heats you with wet steam whereas a Finnish sauna with dry steam. The heat inside a sauna is normally kept at a steady temperature with a relative humidity of between 15 - 30 percent. The Finns normally keep the humidity in their saunas at about 40 percent. It’s highly recommended to stand under a cold shower or jump in a cold water basin after a hot sauna or banya. In winter some Russian people like to run out of the bathhouse and rub themselves with snow or jump in the ice hole, cut into lakes and rivers.
